Seminar Details

As part of the TÜBİTAK 124N067 project titled “Sustainable Management of Aquaculture Production Systems,” a seminar and workshop entitled “Aquaculture and Sustainable Development: Ending Hunger through Responsible Food Production” was delivered by Prof. Dr. Güray Çelik on March 04, 2026.

During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Güray Çelik from the Department of Environmental Engineering at Bursa Uludağ University presented the current state of global food systems, the impact of the growing world population on food demand, and the role of aquaculture in sustainable food production. Within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger, the contribution of aquatic food production to global food security was discussed. In addition, the nutritional value of blue foods, their environmental performance, and their potential contributions to sustainable food systems were emphasized.

The presentation also provided information on the Global Food Security Index, explaining that food security is evaluated through the pillars of affordability, availability, quality and safety, and sustainability and adaptation. In this context, the food security indicators of Türkiye, Chile, and Norway were presented comparatively, highlighting how different national food systems, production capacities, and sustainability approaches influence food security.

Furthermore, environmental stressors affecting aquaculture systems, the impacts of climate change on aquaculture production, and the importance of sustainable aquaculture practices for future food security were comprehensively addressed.

In the workshop session, students were divided into groups and asked to discuss a set of questions related to SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, focusing specifically on aquaculture and sustainable food systems. Each group discussed the questions, and a spokesperson from each group presented their conclusions to the class, fostering an interactive and participatory learning environment.

Our sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. Güray Çelik for the valuable presentation and to all participants for their active engagement.
